Why Halloween: The Game Keeps Crashing: Known Causes and Latest Fixes (1.2.1)

Latest crash and performance fixes: Hotfix 1.2.1 (Oct 28, DLSS-G frame drops), Patch 1.2.0 (Oct 27, crash fixes), Patch 1.1.1 (Oct 16, frame-generation and Quick Resume crashes) and 1.1.0. What IllFonic named on September 17, what is confirmed fixed and how to report a new crash.

THE SHORT ANSWER

IllFonic’s September 17 roadmap post names specific crash scenarios it is investigating: Loomis reinforcements arriving, and end-of-chapter results screens (most reported in the Prologue and Chapter 3), with more crash reports coming from Xbox Series X|S than other platforms. Report new crashes to htghelpdesk@illfonic.com with your username, platform, hardware and what you were doing beforehand. Update, October 6, 2026: Patch 1.1.0 lists fixes for several AMD, Story Mode, Execution-cinematic and Xbox Quick Resume crashes, but does not name the Loomis-reinforcement or results-screen crashes. Since then, Patch 1.1.1 (October 16) fixed DLSS/FSR frame-generation, Grab and Xbox crashes, Patch 1.2.0 (October 27) lists various crash fixes, and Hotfix 1.2.1 (October 28) fixed DLSS-G frame-rate drops.

Latest fixes: 1.1.1, 1.2.0 and 1.2.1

Checked against Patch 1.2.1 (Oct 28, 2026).

None of these names the Loomis-reinforcement or results-screen crashes from September, so their status is still unconfirmed. Full log: patch notes. PC settings context: PC system requirements.

What Patch 1.1.0 (October 6) fixed

IllFonic — Patch Notes 1.1.0 ↗ lists these crash and stability items: several crashes on specific AMD hardware; several crashes during Story Mode; crashes during Execution cinematics; crashes with Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S; improved Xbox Series S stability; a “Graphic Card Not Supported” message for hardware below minimum specs (see PC system requirements); and various other crash fixes. On PC, shaders now precompile at startup and DLSS-G support was added.

The notes do not name the two scenarios IllFonic called out in September — Loomis reinforcements arriving, and end-of-chapter results screens. The Story Mode crash fix is the closest match, but that is our reading, not an official statement. Update first, then report if the same crash still happens.

Crash scenarios IllFonic has acknowledged

IllFonic — What’s Coming Next ↗ names two specific crash triggers the team is investigating: Michael players crashing when Loomis reinforcements arrive, and crashes on the end-of-chapter results/AAR screen in Story Mode, most commonly reported in the Prologue and Chapter 3. The same post says crash reports are more frequent on Xbox Series X|S than on other platforms, without giving a specific cause yet.

These are acknowledged, in-progress issues, not confirmed-fixed ones. That post expected a patch the week of September 21; it shipped as Patch 1.0.3 on September 22, and Patch 1.1.0 followed on October 6.

What Patch 1.0.3 (Sept 22) did about crashes

IllFonic — Patch Notes 1.0.3 ↗ lists “various crash fixes and optimization improvements” without naming scenarios. The Loomis-reinforcements and results-screen crashes are not called out, so treat them as unconfirmed-fixed: update first, then report if they still happen.

Other known bugs IllFonic is tracking

Also named in the September 17 post: the Shape Jump ability getting stuck on cooldown; civilians losing the ability to move after being released from a Grab; civilians who break free of a Grab still being executed in public matches; and residents spawning on rooftops. Patch 1.0.3 lists fixes for the first three (plus Killer Sense getting stuck on cooldown); rooftop resident spawns are not mentioned. IllFonic — Patch Notes 1.0.3 ↗

How to report a new crash

IllFonic’s support channel for this game is htghelpdesk@illfonic.com. Include your username, platform, hardware/device spec, and exactly what you were doing right before the crash (the action, location and any other players involved). A short clip or screenshot of the error, if you have one, is more useful than a description alone.

Before reporting, check patch notes to confirm you're on the current version — some crash reports turn out to be already-fixed issues from an older build.

Questions before you retry

Is Halloween: The Game crashing for everyone?

IllFonic has acknowledged specific crash scenarios — Loomis reinforcements arriving and Story Mode results screens, especially in the Prologue and Chapter 3 — rather than a single universal cause.

Are Xbox Series X|S crashes different from “not supported on Xbox One”?

Yes, these are separate topics. Series X|S is a fully supported platform having stability issues; Xbox One is not supported at all — see the Xbox One compatibility page for that question.

What is the latest crash fix?

Hotfix 1.2.1 (October 28, 2026) fixed DLSS-G frame-rate drops; Patch 1.2.0 and Patch 1.1.1 list further crash fixes, including DLSS/FSR frame-generation crashes in 1.1.1.

Did Patch 1.1.0 fix the crashes?

It lists fixes for several AMD, Story Mode, Execution-cinematic and Xbox Quick Resume crashes, but it does not say every crash is resolved. Update to 1.1.0 first and report any that remain.
