- completing the new Scythe Progressive Challenges, or
- buying the new 1989 Michael.
The October 5 announcement says the same thing in other words: the Scythe can be unlocked through in-game challenges, and it is unlocked immediately for players who buy the Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers skin. If the Scythe challenge was missing: Hotfix 1.2.1
On October 28, IllFonic — Patch Notes 1.2.1 ↗ fixed an issue that prevented players from accessing the new Scythe Progressive Challenge. IllFonic asks players to restart the client for the fix to take effect. The same fix is in the Steam announcement. The Scythe challenge list is not published
The 1.2.0 notes list new Progressive Challenge targets for five weapons — Hatchet, Kitchen Knife, Pick-Axe, Pitchfork and Wood-Axe — but no Scythe entries. We do not copy community lists here. The other weapons’ targets are on 1.2.0 challenge targets.

Which side uses it?
EDITORIAL, NOT A NEW FACT
The notes call the Scythe a “Starting Weapon” without saying in plain words which side equips it. The paid route is a Michael skin, and every other weapon Progressive Challenge in the same notes is written around Michael’s executions. So we expect the Scythe challenges to be played as Michael. That is our reading, not an IllFonic statement. Check the challenge text in your own client.
If progress is not counting
Separate “I can’t open the challenge” (the 1.2.1 fix above) from “it opens but does not count”. For the second case, follow the challenge-tracking checklist. Every version since launch is in the patch notes log, and everything else in the same update is in the Tower Farm Terror overview.
