“Failed to select service region” is a login-time failure that typically appears after the client hangs on Backend Authentication. It blocks the region-select screen or main menu. It is not established as a permanent region lock for most players, and it is distinct from “Bypass Failed” match-join errors. IllFonic has not published a public error-code dictionary; treat simultaneous reports as likely service-side.
Player reports + third-party error trackers · not an official error dictionary. References and scope below. What the message is — and is not
Players report the exact string Failed to select service region (sometimes localized) when login stalls at Backend Authentication and then fails before the region-select screen or main menu. IsThisGameDown — Failed to Select Service Region ↗
It is a login-time failure, distinct from:
- the intentional numbered login queue (queued for login)
- Invalid queue response, which more often follows a mid-match disconnect (Invalid queue response)
- “Bypass Failed: Server is not accepting new player sessions,” which is a match-join error, not a region-select failure
Many threads describe the same chain: Backend Authentication hang → Failed to select service region. See Backend Authentication for the preceding step.
Is this a permanent region lock?
Reports come from multiple countries and platforms, including players outside Australia. IsThisGameDown — Failed to Select Service Region ↗ Australia’s separate classification decision (Refused Classification) is a legal sales restriction, not the same as this login error — see Australia.
The evidence reviewed here does not establish Failed to select service region as a deliberate permanent block for specific countries outside that known classification case. During high-load windows it behaves more like a failed handshake to the region-selection or authentication backend.
This page does not recommend VPN workarounds or store-region changes; those carry account and storefront ToS risks and are not treated as official fixes.
Checks that are reasonable — not guaranteed fixes
IllFonic has not published official step-by-step remediation for this exact string in the sources reviewed here. The following are diagnostic steps players commonly try; none is verified on this site as a universal cure:

Checks by platform: PS5, Xbox and PC
The same message can call for different checks depending on where you play. This is general platform guidance, not a game-specific fix.
- PS5: check PlayStation Network service status ↗ first — a PlayStation Network issue stops many online games — and confirm your PS Plus subscription is active, since the PlayStation Store — Halloween: The Game ↗ listing says it is required for online play. Then fully close the game (not just back to the home screen) and relaunch. See the PS5 guide.
- Xbox Series X|S: check Xbox network status ↗ and confirm your online-multiplayer subscription is active (Game Pass and multiplayer). Patch 1.1.0 lists a fix for Quick Resume crashes, so update before testing. IllFonic — Patch Notes 1.1.0 ↗
- PC (Steam / Epic): restart the client and verify game files. The Steam — Halloween: The Game news hub ↗ and the official channels show whether others are affected.
What to record if you report it
The publisher support address listed on the Xbox store page is htghelpdesk@illfonic.com Xbox store (US) — Halloween: The Game ↗, and IllFonic’s September 17 roadmap post gave the same address for crash reports. IllFonic — What’s Coming Next ↗ For a login failure, record the same basics: platform and build number, the exact error text, the local time with timezone, whether you were solo or in a crossplay party, and whether Story Mode loads. Never include passwords. A pattern of identical reports at the same time is useful evidence; see Is Halloween: The Game down? for how to check.
What this page will not claim
This guide will not invent registry edits, cracked clients, required VPN lists, or unverified network command sequences as official fixes. Third-party “fix” videos are not treated as primary evidence here. If IllFonic publishes an official note naming Failed to select service region, this page should be updated to cite it.

Questions before you retry
Is Failed to select service region the same as Backend Authentication?
They usually appear in sequence: hang on Backend Authentication, then Failed to select service region. They are related login-stage failures, not the intentional numbered queue.
Does it mean my country is blocked?
Not for most reports. The string appears across many regions. Australia’s classification ban is a different legal restriction — see the Australia page.
Will restarting always fix it?
No. Restarting is a reasonable first check, but when many players see the same error at once, the issue is usually on the service side.
